About Dr Marta Vilaro

Fellowship-trained at Moorfields, focused on the eyelids.

Dr Marta Vilaro is a consultant ophthalmologist who leads the oculoplastics department at Queen's Hospital, Romford. She sees private patients in Central London at Welbeck London and in Essex at The Holly Private Hospital, offering both functional and cosmetic eyelid care.

Her work covers blepharoplasty, ptosis, eyelid bags and lumps, cosmetic eyelid and brow surgery, skin cancer reconstruction, watery eyes, facial palsy and thyroid eye disease, alongside non-surgical treatments. She also teaches, running surgical cadaver dissection courses, wet labs and simulation training.

Dr Vilaro qualified at the University of Barcelona in 2010 and completed an oculoplastics fellowship at the IMO clinic in Barcelona. She then trained in London, with a fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital and time in the craniofacial unit at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, before joining Moorfields' Adnexal unit.

She holds an MS and an equivalent-standard FRCS. In her NHS role she leads an eyelid and tear duct service for children and adults, and brings that same depth of experience to her private practice.

FAQs

Your questions,answeredclearly.

Ask the doctor
Do I need a referral to see Dr Vilaro?

Most insurers ask for a referral from your GP or optician before they authorise a consultation. If you are paying for yourself, you can book directly with her team.

Will my insurance cover treatment, and what if it does not?

Dr Vilaro is recognised by the major UK health insurers. Cover depends on your policy and the reason for treatment, and functional problems are more often covered than cosmetic ones. If your insurer declines, you are welcome to self-fund.

Who will carry out my operation?

Dr Vilaro does. She meets you at your consultation, operates herself and sees you afterwards for your follow-up, so you are never handed to a different surgeon on the day.

What happens at a first consultation?

She will examine your eyelids, ask about your health and explain what she finds in plain English. If surgery is not the right answer for you, she will tell you so.

How much does a consultation cost?

Consultation fees are confirmed when you book. Any surgery is quoted in writing after your consultation, once Dr Vilaro knows exactly what your treatment involves.

How soon can I be seen?

Appointments are often available within a couple of weeks, in Central London or Essex. Call or request a callback and her team will confirm the next available slot.

How long is recovery after eyelid surgery?

Most people take 7 to 10 days off work, and bruising usually settles within two weeks. Full healing and final results take around six to eight weeks, and everyone recovers a little differently.

Will I have visible scars?

Incisions are placed in the natural eyelid crease wherever possible, so scars are usually very well hidden once they have healed.

Can eyelid surgery be combined with other procedures?

Yes, where clinically appropriate. Dr Vilaro sometimes combines eyelid surgery with brow or lower-face procedures, and will talk this through at your consultation.

What are the risks of eyelid surgery?

All surgery carries risks, including bruising, swelling, infection and, rarely, changes in vision. Dr Vilaro will explain the risks that apply to you before you decide anything.

Does Dr Vilaro also see NHS patients?

Her NHS clinical work is separate from her private practice. This website covers her private consultations and surgery only.

What should I bring to my consultation?

Bring any relevant medical letters or scans, a list of your current medications and, if you are using insurance, your policy details.
